Eating Habits and Portion Size How They Contribute to Obesity

It is no wonder we are having such an epidemic when poor and bad eating habits are so out of control, and these are leading to a world of obesity.
Not only are people not eating healthy but their conception of portion size has gotten larger and larger over the years. Now when the correct portion size is suggested people are mortified. “That won’t sustain a mouse let along me” they scream.
When did our eating habits and portion sizes change? When did a meal for 4 turn into a meal for 1?
There is a preconceived idea that if the plate is not heaped with food then we’re not getting enough to eat. A lot of this is due to manufacturers and fast food chains, with larger packaging and super sizing everything, and all you can eat buffets.
Larger portion sizes are expected, therefore, when out for a meal, if the portion size is not what is expected, we feel cheated. We are at a time that we just want more. However, if you eat more, have larger portions than your body needs and can use, eventually you will become larger in size.
More is definitely not better!
Eating habits and portion size are the key to controlling weight.
If your eating habits are poor then there is a good chance your children’s eating habits will be as well.
In Britain, the government has introduced healthy foods into school meals, and are looking at nutrition, as being part of the curriculum. Teaching children to eat properly will lead to healthier adults later. They are hoping to combat the obesity epidemic through education.
Get children eating healthy so they do not crave unhealthy foods.
As a parent or guardian, one way to help, is by providing your child with interesting and easy to eat meal. Most schools have a time period for children to eat, so make the meal simple.
Some suggestions may be; hard boiled eggs, proper cheese pieces, raisins, vegetable sticks and fruit already cut to bite size pieces, crackers or even cereal which may be more appealing and easier to eat.
Healthy eating does not have to be boring or even uneventful. Nor does it have to be time consuming to prepare healthy meals.
With health and the obesity epidemic being at the fore front today, most restaurants, even fast food outlets are offering a healthier choice. However, it is up to you to make the choices.
Having a good understanding of how the body uses food and which foods promote weight gain and which promote weight loss will help. People get caught up on calorie intake but really do not understand what is best for them. Others believe that, you can never have a sweet again, but this does not have to be the case.
When we think of food, do we really understand what the different types are? For example, when you think of potatoes, do you think this food is good for the body as it provides energy? Or are you convinced that it will only cause you to gain weight? Potatoes are a carbohydrate and we need carbs for energy. But the trick to eating carbs is not which ones but how much. This is why portion size is so important.
Understanding your body and knowing the correct portion size you require, is the key to controlling your weight. Too much of any food will lead to too much of you, because your body can only use up so much food at one time. Therefore, you need to understand your body’s needs before you start jumping into trying to lose weight.
You may have to start by measuring and weighing your portions, in order to understand what is right for you. You need smaller portions of carbohydrates and proteins and more of vegetables. After a while you will find it becomes easy and natural to only take the right amounts.
One way to help you get started, if you can afford it, get rid of your large plates and bowls and replace them with smaller one. That way your plate does not look half full and you will not feel cheated.
Eat slowly, allow your body time to know it is being fed and it will alter your hunger mechanism and you will become satisfied. If you eat quickly you tend to over eat then later you will feel uncomfortably full.
Learn which foods are better for you and eat the ones you enjoy, rather than forcing yourself to have foods you don’t like. Know which foods should not be eaten often, therefore make them special treats for yourself and your family.
Make meals a sociable time, that way, you will look forward to them and you will feel better. Remember not to let yourself get so hungry you just eat anything and quickly. Think ahead and plan, always have some fruit, vegetable sticks, or a healthy snack bar in your bag or desk rather than missing a meal.
If you have to eat out a lot in restaurants, then make healthy choices. When ordering your meal ask to have any sauce or dressings on the side, that way you are in control. Ask for a larger portion of vegetables and less carbohydrates. Pick leaner cuts of red meat or better still, choose chicken or fish dishes. If bread is brought before the meal, place a piece on your side plate and eat it with your meal rather than filling up on it and then forcing yourself to eat your meal. Share a starter if possible rather than having the whole thing.

The Causes Of Obesity

With daily focus in America on weight, health and obesity, there is one question that gets ignored: what causes obesity?
There is no simple answer.
Basically, a person becomes obese when more calories are consumed than he or she can burn. This is called “calorie imbalance.” Beyond this simple definition, the factors that cause obesity are varied and many.
Calorie imbalance has many things that affect it. What causes this imbalance varies from one person to another. We also know obesity is more than just over-eating. Genetic, environmental, psychological, and other factors seem to play big roles in causing obesity.
Here are some factors that have been attributed to obesity:
1. Weight Gain During Certain Periods
A person commonly gains more weight during the following periods of life: between 12 and 18 months of age, between 12 and 16 years of age, adulthood when a person gains in excess of 60% of their ideal body weight and women, during pregnancy.
2. Genetic Factors
Heredity is linked to obesity. Studies of adopted children show that adopted children tend to have weights closer to their biological parents than to their adoptive parents.
3. Environmental Factors
Environment also strongly influences obesity. This includes lifestyle behaviors such as what a person eats and level of physical activity. The tendency to eat high-fat foods, to use labor saving devices coupled with a sedentary lifestyle are causes behind obesity.
4. Psychological Factors
Many people eat when they are stressed, bored or angry. Over time, the association between an emotion and food can become firmly fixed.
Depression and stress can also lead to obesity and are leading causes of eating disorders. Studies show most overweight people have no more psychological problems than people of average weight.
Most eating disorders can also be traced to behavioral or psychological difficulties. Up to 10 percent of people who are mildly obese and who try to lose weight on their own or through commercial weight loss programs have binge eating disorder. This disorder is even more common in people who are severely obese.
5. Age
Metabolism slows down with advancing age. As you get older you do not require as many calories to maintain your weight as you did when you were younger.
If you know about these factors you are in a better position to cope with the life cycles and manage your weight without getting into the problems of obesity.

What Do you Know About Obesity?

What do you know about obesity? Most people did not know. For them, obesity goes no deeper than a less than fashionable look. But I will tell you the truth, obesity is an epidemic, a disease spreading fast in our world, across both the industrialized world and emerging economies these days.
The definition of obesity is having too much energy that will become fat on your body. Obesity puts a strain on joints and bones that have to sustain more weight than ever before, which leads to arthritis in the long term. The weight also tends to make people lazier. It means more fat is put on your body.
I want to ask you something. Do you love eating high cholesterol foods? In the past, I loved it but I know it is dangerous for my health then I stop eating high cholesterol foods, especially junk foods. I hope you stop eating junk foods too. You know the example. It is burgers, pizza, steak, etc. High cholesterol brought by eating too much of the high cholesterol food and if you lack of activity and will impair the proper functioning of your heart and blood vessels. I am certain this will caused high blood pressure, stroke and other blood and heart conditions on your body. Excess fat also leads cessation of breathing during sleep.
Of course, you can cure your obesity problem with effort and patience. As this diseases caused by obesity spreads over the land, so do the efforts for curing obesity increase. You can read my review about weight loss problem in my website later. Remember, you must have patience and effort. Without patience and effort, you will never change. Do not believe in quick weight loss products.Definition of Body Mass Index
Obesity is when your body mass index reach 30 or above. Do you know what body mass index is? BMI (body mass index) is a measure of a person’s weight scaled according to height. This index serves to show the amount of fat stored on your body, and if your BMI is 30 or higher, the worst is your exposure to certain diseases.
Physicians also warn that having a lot of fat stored around your waist will increases the chances of developing diseases. Size 35 for women and 40 for men means only trouble for your body, at the present and in the future.
Unhealthy eating combined with sustained lack of activity can caused obesity. Food gives you more calories than you burn, so please be careful when you eating. Stay healthy.
I think there are two reasons why people became obese. The first reason is they cannot control their own eating habits. The second reason is lack of activity. With neither the time, nor the inclination to control one’s meals, it is no wonder people get fat all over the world, everywhere. About lack of activity, it is different from the past where people walking or riding horse to go working. Unfortunately, these days most people using car for transportation. Those kind of people didn’t know how to lose weight, they only know working, looking for money, and when they arrived in their home, they eating high cholesterol foods.
Obesity also inherited from family members. If your family has a history of obesity, then you should watch your weight. But I believe you can cut off obesity problem from your family tradition with your effort and patience.Tell me more about fast foods, do you think it is dangerous?
You maybe busy. I am busy. Everyone are busy with their own works. But you should not eat fast food put before you. Pizza, steaks, fried chickens, and burgers may look good for you, but they are fat too highly powered got your health. And I know that a single burger is worth a whole meal in calories, but your stomach, sadly, never be filled by a regular burger, so it will keep asking for more burgers, and you will eat more burgers to satisfy your stomach despite the fact that your body does not need more burgers. I suggest you should stop eating fast foods. If you can’t, then you should follow my diet plans in my website.
I often received mails from fat people who spent half-one hour daily for exercises but they didn’t lose their weight. Many people try diets programs to lose a few pounds but when they finished their exercises, they feel hungry then they return to their old eating habits. It means that weight lost turns into weight regained. Then your body gets used to these lean times and it will harder for you to lose weight.
Then you need to know that following a diet is hard, because you will always crave the high calories foods. The fact that delicious foods are forbidden because of their high calories makes them that much more attractive for people. Both you and me know that. But you must learn to control yourself, like I did. It is the way to lose weight. Get your own successful diet. A successful diet means adjusting your lifestyle to your needs, especially by making time for more exercising. Also please don’t ever forget to control your eating habits. You need to control yourself. However, you may need a natural weight loss pills to help you lose unwanted pounds. You should choose only the natural weight loss pills. It really help your weight loss problem.

Childhood Obesity Can Be Solved

Childhood Overweight and Obesity has become a great concern in America today. Data from NHANES surveys conducted for years 1976 to 1980 and 2003 to 2006 reveal an alarming increase in the childhood overweight and obesity epidemic. The frequency of obesity in children ages 2 to 5 increased from 5% to 12.4%. In children ages 6 to 11 and 12 to 19, the frequency of obesity grew from 6.5% to 17% and 5% to 17.6%, respectively.

The relevancy of the statistics is the pure definition of an unhealthy lifestyle developed within the early years of life and continuing into adulthood. American children are being consumed by unhealthy eating habits that will destroy their lives if a healthy nutritional program is not introduced.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

“The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn’t about short-term dietary changes. It’s about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the number of calories you consume with the number of calories your body uses.”

Though the answer of changing your diet and remaining active always sounds good in theory, few people are successful in developing a lifelong plan, usually reverting back to “old habits” that are “easy and comfortable”. Children need guidance at an early age about the importance of a healthy nutritional program.

Once nutrition is introduced, energy and health follow!

In order to successfully lose weight, the basic diet plan should be to emphasize nutrition. Nutrition is a key factor in maintaining healthy weight and minimizing the cravings of unhealthy foods. Plus, a balanced nutritional program provides young children the bodily needs necessary for healthy growth and physical endurance.

Be a role model for your children. Introduce nutrition. Implement a plan designed for step-by-step progress and become amazed by the results derived from a simple dedication to a simple nutritional program.

Find your healthy lifestyle—NOW!!!

Is it true that obesity can hold down your career?

For a long time ago, weight is considered in the entirely opposite way now. In many nations, the social thought is the conception that slim is definitely better, a way of method that goes into the school, office, college, and many other places.

Though the broad agreement is that weight must not be a difficulty in the office. Unfortunately, it is. Heaviness positively seems to matter to administrator not only in the United States, but also around the world, giving the odds to the old age saying that look is everything. People who look the part of a perfect model of a woman ( for example, the way that society thinks a woman should look ) seem to have better jobs, promotions, and salaries than their obese co-worker.

There is a case when a job applicant is considered as a perfect appearance man or woman,  and shows an regular presentation skill on a project, and then there is the other applicant who is overweight but shows simply better presentation skill on a project. There are probabilities  that man or woman with better appearance will get the position and promotion a lot higher, even though he or she had only shown basic presentation skill.

This way of thinking of people’s image and weight makes the working place seem unkind . Career women presently are not only competing with men for equality in the workplace, but also they struggle to win the competition with their thinner female co-workers as well.

Having slim body are what everybody dreams of. However, getting them is not as simple as it says. Somebody needs to be determined to achieve slim body and have healthy lifestyle, such as manage to have his or her diet controlled, exercise routinely, and keep in mind, stress can also affect your physical health and disturb body metabolism.

Medical consultants are working hard to find the best method to overcome the stress this causes their overweight female patients. Stress management and consultation are clearly needed as well. Obesity not only brings stress and disadvantage in career but also serious problem in health.

Best slimming pills definitely help you to bind fat in order to gain slimmer appearance and better health.

How is Body Image Tied to Obesity and Other Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are very closely tied to the body image that young people develop. Those who have healthy relationships, healthy eating habits, and are physically active do not usually have as many problems as those teens who do not eat, do not exercise, and are in relationships with either parents, siblings, or other teens that ridicule their body and make them feel uncomfortable about who they are.
The average woman in America is 5′4″ tall and weighs about 142 pounds. The average American fashion model is 5′9″ tall, but only weighs around 110 pounds. Adults who are obsessed with their weight often became that way during their teenage years, when pressure to be accepted by peers and by the opposite sex was very high.
Because of this, eating disorders have been on the rise, and girls as young as nine years old have been known to diet. Dieting while still growing can be very dangerous, and can harm a young person. Childhood obesity is on the rise and should be watched for, but there is no reason to go to the opposite extreme.
There is no argument that a healthy diet and good exercise plan is important for any age, as it helps people to lose weight, and they ultimately weigh less naturally if they are active. There is also no argument that overweight people often have health problems, and that much of the obesity in this country starts in the childhood and teenage years, so weight loss can be very important, but only down to a healthy weight. Eating properly and exercising moderately are not the same as starving oneself and working out until physical exhaustion sets in or one passes out.
As long as society values extraordinarily thin women, teenage girls will continue to wrestle with their body images, and eating disorders will continue to increase. There has also been an alarming increase in the number of teenage boys with eating disorders, as they try to emulate fashion models and actors who have “perfect” bodies.
Many of these young men feel that they are too heavy, and they are also concerned that they do not have enough muscle definition, so they eat less and work out harder, which is fine up to a point but can become very dangerous when they do not get the nutrition that they need for all of the exercise that they are getting. Without understanding and change in society’s images of the “ideal” body, this disturbing trend will continue to grow in the future.

Overweight Or Obese?

It really is an interesting question as to what category the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would consider you to fall into. Sadly, two out of every three readers of this article are in the portion of the population that this question would appropriate for. Yes, 66% of all adults over age 20 are considered either overweight or obese when measured against established charts for height and weight. Men beat out women, with 70.5% of men overweight or obese versus 61.6% women. You see ladies, we men are better than you at doing certain things. All right, not quite a badge of honor.
There are some limitations in establishing the charts used to make this determination and it is far from perfect, but it does provide a pretty consistent base. The most common method is the body mass index (BMI), which uses weight adjusted for height but is not gender specific. Males and females are measured the same. Most doctors and researchers use this index and most statistics are generated based on the index. As I mentioned, it does have limitations in that it is not gender-specific, nor does it take into account the percentage of body fat.
If you are curious as to what your BMI is, the calculation is simple. The true formula is metric, but since we in America think pounds and ounces, here it is. Take your weight in pounds and multiply it by 704.5 which is the multiplier the National Institute of Health uses. Divide this number by your height in inches. Take that number and do the same again, divide it a second time by height in inches. Here, let’s use me for an example:
195 x 704.5 = 137,377.5
Being 6′2″, I now use 74 inches as my height
137,377.5 divided by 74 = 1,856.5
1,856.5 divided by 74 again = Just at 25 with rounding.
So if I rely entirely on the table and with the World Health Organization definition, 25 or greater is consistent with being in the overweight category. Now, here lie the limitations. At 53 years old, 6′2″ and 195 lbs., I also have only 7-8% body fat. After 35 years of weight training and doing amateur competitive body-building up to age 47 or so, I have built up a solid foundation of muscle with little extra fat. To the majority, in appearance I would be labeled “lean”, if not a bit underweight. If you fall into my type of category, then the overweight label is not accurate, but I would imagine the overall percentage is not high enough to render the index useless. On the flip side of this coin, an elderly person, who has lost a lot of muscle mass and has a high percentage of body fat, may very well have about an 18 to 24 index, which is considered good while they may correctly be labeled “overweight” by appearance and have reduced nutritional reserve.
So the index does get balanced by both factors and, overall, it is pretty good in its intended purpose. To me, it is not critical that only 64% instead of 66% are overweight or obese, only that such a staggering percentage of the American population is. If measured for female minorities, the prevalence is even higher, non-Hispanic black women is 79.6%, Mexican-American women 73% and non-Hispanic white women 57.6%. It sort of flips for men with non-Hispanic white males 71%, non-Hispanic black males 67% and Mexican-American men74.6%.
However you look at these statistics, come away with one fact, we are way overweight as a nation. It is staggering and something that must be addressed, as individuals, and by the industries that directly benefit from this condition, the healthcare and food industry. $61 billion alone is the amount estimated for direct costs of obesity meaning trips to the doctors, medications and tests. $56 billion in indirect costs such as lost wages and future earnings from premature deaths. If you are in the obese third of the population, there is a 10- to 50% increased risk of death from all causes, with most cardiovascular causes.
Consider these statistics in light of the fact more diet products exist than ever before. There are more health clubs and fitness centers than ever. More diet programs such as Weight Watchers and Nutri-system. More cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck. Medical procedures like gastric bypass. Prescription diet pills and a ton of over the counter products claiming weight loss benefit. More information available for you than ever before. Yet, we get fatter and fatter as a nation, and now at epidemic levels.
Without exploring theories here, as I have written other articles on my opinion of the causes, I propose that we are directly and intentional being lead down this road by the industries that benefit the most from it. If you research it, the start of this epidemic started in the mid-80’s with the introduction of toxic chemical sweeteners, mainly aspartame. Without exception, the most toxic chemical we were ever allowed to consume by the FDA. Please explore this product on your own. You owe it to your health and all those around you. The marketing campaign is brilliant in how it removes any subliminal guilt in over-indulging and that is why all studies show people who use diet products consume 25% more calories a day than those who don’t. Charge a higher price because it is diet and have you consume more of it spells profits. The aspartame to disease link covers the full spectrum, including depression, bi-polar, ADD, memory, joint pain, muscle pain, vision and on and on. From these symptoms, hundreds of drugs were born to treat them.
In my opinion, we as a nation, are being lead down a destructive road that, unaltered, will only get worse. The human body, absent major disease, is designed to last 120 or so years. If we approached anywhere near that age, our economic system would collapse due to population rises, availability of natural resources and fuel to support the increase, and the collapse of the Social Security system to name just a few reasons. So look at where we are being lead and honestly ask yourself this very morbid question as to whether you are being kept overweight and unhealthy for a reason.

Obesity – a Review

Most people think that obesity goes no deeper than a less than fashionable look, but they are wrong. Obesity today is an epidemic, a disease spreading fast across both the industrialized world and emerging economies. Obesity means having too much fat on your body. First and foremost, obesity puts a strain on joints and bones that have to sustain more weight than before, which leads to arthritis in the long run. The weight also tends to make people less active, which, in turn, means more weight is put on. The lack of activity and high cholesterol brought by eating too much of the wrong kind of food impair the proper functioning of your heart and blood vessels. This results in high blood pressure, stroke and other blood and heart conditions. Excess weight also leads to apnea, the cessation of breathing during sleep. However, obesity can be cured with patience and effort. As this diseases spreads over the land, so do the efforts for curing it increase. Talk to your physician if you are interested in getting rid of obesity. Recognizing obesity? The textbook definition of obesity is a body mass index of 30 or above. The body mass index is a measure of a person’s weight scaled according to height, as developed by Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet in 1840. This index serves to show the amount of fat stored on the body, and the higher your BMI is, the worst is your exposure to certain diseases.Physicians also warm that having a lot of fat stored around your waist increases the risk of developing diseases. Going beyond size 35 in women and size 40 in men means only trouble in the future.

Impact of Obesity on Your Heart

Many medical professionals believe that obesity and heart disease are indirectly related. They contribute to significant risk factors for such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and arteriosclerosis to the degree of obesity of a given person. While obesity is a contributing factor for many of these health conditions studies are now suggesting that there is a more direct relationship between these diseases.
What is the Relationship?
Recent medical studies suggest that while obesity can affect many risk factors associated with the health of your heart the two also have a direct relationship in that obesity can be a predictive indicator of heart disease. In a fourteen year study it was indicated that middle-aged women with a BMI index of greater than twenty-three but less than twenty-five still had an approximate 50% increase in the risk of both fatal and non-fatal coronary heart disease. This indicates a clear, direct connection between these two diseases.
Another factor that may suggest severe obesity and heart disease are more directly related is that of abnormalities in the left ventricular mass and function of the heart. While in the majority of cases, these abnormalities are seen in the presence of both hypertension and obesity there are recorded cases where these abnormalities are seen without hypertension being apparent. In these cases the only condition that appears to have a significant affect on condition of the heart is severe obesity. This information suggests that obesity and heart disease are directly linked and can definitely lead to heart failure.
Available Treatments
Since a connection either direct or indirect has long been established between obesity and heart disease, the medical profession has developed a number of methods over the years to positively impact these two related health problems.
In certain patients with congestive heart failure for instance it was determined that sodium reduction in the diet and even a small reduction in weight has the potential to dramatically improve the function of the heart leading to reduced risk of heart disease. In fact a number of studies have indicated that a drastic weight loss such as after gastro-intestinal surgery can greatly decrease the occurrence of each of these diseases as well as insulin based diabetes.
There are a number of methods available today to treat both obesity and heart disease. These can include changes in diet and exercise practices, medication, and sometimes even surgery. Only you and your doctor can decide what choice is right for you. Whatever method is chosen the connection between these diseases are becoming more clear everyday. With a little knowledge and a plan you can improve your health and have a positive impact on the nations obesity crisis.
To Your Healthy Heart!
